Sampling Brew off the Beaten Path in Amsterdam, Netherlands

If you ever find yourself in Amsterdam, stroll just outside the city center and you’ll be doubly rewarded with delicious beer and a cool Netherlands landmark. Tucked away in a neighborhood, brewery Brouweij ‘t IJ is the perfect place to relax and pretend you’re a local. Sample one (or ten) of the beers that are brewed and bottled right on the premises. The indoor seating offers lively sounds of good conversation in languages from across the globe. Beer bottles old and new fill every square inch of shelving along the walls. Sit outside, and you’ll get an up-close and personal view of the tallest wooden windmill in the Netherlands, De Gooyer. You can even take a guided tour of the brewery to learn all about your favorite new brewski. The tasting room is open daily from 3pm to 8pm. It’s the perfect place to end a day of sightseeing or kick start the night.

We liked this place so much, we managed to stay nearly four hours! The beer is absolutely delicious. I usually always gravitate to lighter beers; so my favorite of those I sampled was the Pilzen (a hoppy blonde beer). Grab a bowl of peanuts, Trappist cheese, salami (all complimentary), try a new beer and soak in Amsterdam. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon of vacation.
